Limestone pavements & pastures of Ribblesdale & Malhamdale : 1 day photography workshop

Limestone pavements & pastures of Ribblesdale & Malhamdale : 1 day photography workshop

The limestone pavements and pastures of Ribblesdale and Wharfedale enjoy a wonderful diversity of flora, typically set against a wonderful backdrop of rolling terrain, with Yorkshire's highest peaks often visible beyond. We will concentrate on a variety of limestone pastures, pavement and possibly woodland, in Ribblesdale, Wharfedale and Malhamdale; also spending time in some beautiful naturere reserves. Exactly where we spend our time will be determined by conditions on the day - it is likely we will spend most of our time in Ribblesdale, but the other dales offer good alternatives. Depending how the season pans out, we will have the chance to see the hawthorns in blossom, as well as orchids, bluebells, primula and many other wild flowers. I will work out the best options for us on the day, depending on how things have developed and on the weather during the day.

The days are very long at this time of year so we will start early afternoon and finish well into the evening!

With a small group of 4-5 participants, there'll be plenty of time for us to work in depth, bouncing ideas off each other and looking for potential for images in all types of location - not just the spectacular grand vistas but also the more intimate, abstract landscapes that can be made almost anywhere. There will also be plenty of opportunity for macro photography, with flower and insect life abundant in this area.

We will look at how to make the most of conditions on the day - ensuring any kind light can be exploited to its best advantage. Almost without exception, there is no such thing as bad light! We'll look at using a range of lenses, with opportunity to work on wide angle landscapes and tree studies, more compressed landscapes and studies of flowers and insects with longer focal lengths and macro lenses.

Practicalities

  • What time will the workshop start and finish?

The workshop will start at 2.00pm and finish at around 10.00pm.

  • Where will we meet?

We will meet in Ribblesdales - potentially Horton-in-Ribblesdale - to be agreed nearer the time.

  • What level of photographer does this workshop suit?

Ideally suited for intermediate photographers and above. Although with a small group size, it is possible to cater for most needs.

  • How fit do I need to be?

There may be the odd steeper walk but nothing of any length - reasonable fitness would be an advantage as well as the confidence to walk on uneven terrain and rocky limestone pavement - in in doubt, please ask.

  • What gear should I bring?

Camera and a selection of lenses - ideally covering wide angle to telephoto and macro, or at least extension tubes, if you have them.  Tripod, spare batteries and memory cards. Good walking boots. Clothing for any kind of weather. Comfortable backpack or shoulder bag .Waterproofs for you and your gear. You may also want to bring some snacks and a drink, although we will almost certainly pass shops and cafes.

  • Can I borrow a filter kit?

You are welcome to borrow/share a Lee filter kit - including big stopper, little stopper and ND grads. Please note this is at your own risk, although we've had no breakages to date! Please ask in advance and advise of the filter ring sizes of any lenses you may be bringing.
